Scouts Taster Sessions

On Thursdays the 3drd and 10th of March, Great Yarmouth and Waveney Fencing Club played host to the 4th Lowestoft Scout Group. Over 20 scouts took part in the taster sessions which in doing so would help them gain their Masters in Arms Badges.

On the first night they learnt the basic stance in fencing (En Guarde in Sixte) and how to move in a manner that would enable them to both attack or defend against their opponents through a series of fun games. The part of the night the scouts enjoyed the most had to be when the swords were brought out, enabling them to learn the blade movements necessary for them to attack, parry and riposte against their opponents.

The first week was in preparation of the second, after a quick recap of what they had learnt; the scouts were into a mini competition. Split into four groups, they took turns to fence everyone in their group during the poule stages of the competition. The winners of the poule groups were: Adam Barnard, Oscar Beamish, Brett Warren and Ben. H.

They then progressed onto the semi-finals, first up was Ben vs Adam, this match was very close with points passing between the two fencers, in the end Adam was able to win 5 – 4. The second semi final saw Brett against Oscar, the result of which saw Brett winning 5 – 1.

It was now Adam vs Brett in the final, again this was an extremely close match to begin with, however Brett was able to gain the lead and despite Adam’s best efforts to regain the lead, Brett was the overall winner, taking the match 7 – 4. The four semi-finalists all received medals: Gold to Brett, Silver to Adam and Bronzes to Oscar and Ben.

Some of the scouts enjoyed the taster sessions so much, they hastily booked places on our next beginner’s course and are now active members of the club, with some of them even winning medals at a county level now.

Results of the poules can be seen here and the overall results here.
